Stair Nosings

Stair nosings are the commonly least discussed items in building a stair tread design. To some, they appear as added feature or unnecessary fixture, but they have yet to realize that these are not plainly aesthetic materials for stair building.

Stair nosings are highly functional as they offer safety to the members of the home. It is undeniable that one of the most common accidents in the home includes falling off the stairs, not really because of negligence; but because of inevitable slips.

After all, a slip involves two factors: the surface texture of the sole of the footwear of the person using the stairs; and, the texture or condition of the stairs (slippery waxed, slippery greasy, slippery wet).

For these reasons, it must be realized that stair nosings are indispensable materials in staircase building for they not only provide design uplift to the stairs, but also safety due to their anti-slip or slip-resistant features.

Stair nosings are available for most any type of stair tread. They usually complement iron, metal, wood or concrete stairs. There are many brands or suppliers to choose from in the market.

Most of these suppliers would take charge of the installation and would recommend the maintenance scheme to be applied to ensure the durability and longevity of their product in your home.

You may want to consider Amstep Products, ACL Industries, Balco, EverGlow, Arden, American Safety Tread, Armstrong, Burke Flooring, Flexco, SlipNOT, Strongwell, Wooster and Zero.

You may feel overwhelmed with the many available options in the market but there are simple things to consider in choosing the right supplier.

First, consider what you need. Do you need one for concrete stairs or wooden stairs? Do you need traction? Do you need stair markers, landings or floor perimeters?

Different companies exist with different specialties so identify what is your primary consideration in putting stair nosings. As you have identified your purpose, purchase should be easier.

Second, consider the industry. Is it for a school or academic institution? Is it for a private or public place? Are the stairs to be frequented in the morning where there’s daylight or evening where they need fluorescent markings?

Finally, consider the location. Are these for outdoor or indoor use? Remember, the durability of your nosing would depend on the appropriateness of your material.
