Stair Treads and Risers

As one may have probably noticed, one of the most common fixtures in the house that needs some form of improvement after a long period of time includes stair treads and risers.

One of the most common reasons why these stair parts seem to age over time is due to the consistent wear that foot traffic causes in the home, especially if the staircase is frequently used or the family has a lot of family members.

A necessary thing for one to accomplish this task is to measure the area to be replaced in order to know if there would be adjustment to be made to the new stair treads and risers to be purchased.

One could easily compare prices and know the features of these parts through various sites online or the local hardware shop. There are actually some economical retro- fitting stair treads available, which is suitable for any beginner.

One could also opt for some raw wood material at local lumber shops, however, the cost of cutting and finishing each wood detail would actually cost the same or greater so it would be best to buy pre- finished ones.

Now, after buying a new set of stair treads and risers use a chisel and a hammer to pry open and remove the old tread off their places. Consistently hit the hammer until the corresponding riser or tread comes off.

Before installing the risers, a repainting option could be made by owners to enhance the stair area. After drying out the coating, secure each riser using contact glue and nails.

Afterwards, compare the sizes of the tread to the old ones and cut if the length exceeds the original. Placing the tread is also done the same way as the risers by using construction glue and nailing them down the corners.

For persons who would want to save up an option would be have the old stair parts improved by re- painting or staining them and placing them back to their original places. When choosing this option, make sure to number each part to avoid confusion.
